Figma Madoka Kaname Review

Madoka Magica has always been one of my favorite anime, there's no question. I won't go into the show because 95% of it is full of spoilers and you're really better off watching it blind. I will say that it's meant for all if not older audiences, and is not a show targeted at girls like Magical Girls typically are. In this show, frankly, I love all of the main cast, there isn't a single main character in the show that I dislike, and I like them all for different reasons. Of course, this meant I wanted to have all of their figma, and watching JobbyTheHong's reviews on them only made me have to have their figmas. So when I saw a toy store selling a brand new figma Madoka Kaname, I instantly picked it up.

Box:

The box is the old figma style of box. There is a bright pink background akin to Madoka's main color with bubbly stars and shapes. You get the logo in the middle with a clear window showing the figure and most of it's accessories above it, with the name of the character under the logo.

Behind the box you get some info on the figure as well as some poses and product shots of the figure and a few of it's accessories.

Product:

Out of the box and figma Madoka looks very nice. The figure may look weird but that's more due to my incompetent job at static posing, the figure looks really well, although the neck is a little interesting which I will talk about later. The likeness of the character is captured well, and her cute, small proportions are pretty well sculpted too. It is worthy to not that the elbows look pink compared to the skin, and while it's a minor nitpick it bugs me nonetheless. The paintwork overall is very nicely done with only minor defects, and all details are well printed, all finishes look good and realistic for the most part. The Madoka-style eyes are done especially well, I always liked the way those eyes look, although they seem a bit too far apart here. Still, this figure represents the character quite well and I am overall satisfied with it.

Articulation:

Her head is connected to a revoltech-like joint to let it swivel and go up, tilting is easily possible too. The neck actually leans a lot forward, OOB, because you're actually supposed to display her with her body arched a bit backwards.

Arms go up about 80˚ and swing forward by 90˚.

Her arm is at a swivel by the white tassle and bends a 100˚ elbow.

She abcrunches a bit due to her arched back

She leans back decently too. Then entire front section of her dress is made of a rubbery plastic and sinks into the actual dress as well so it allows these crunches easily.

Her legs are connected on a joint at her panties, and can also swivel a bit. Her knees bend about 120˚ with her feet being able to move too, and her skirt also moves around should you need it too.

Accessories:

You get quite an impressive amount of accessories with this figure, which is quite nice considering the price.

It has a cut-out for a DI stage segment should you want one.

It comes with the standard figma stand that comes with every figma. It bends at 3 joints and pegs into the back of the figure, I love this thing and almost always display my figma with the stand if possible.

You get 11 hands with this figure. Besides the wide open hands on the figure, you get sits, tight grabbing hands, loose grabbing hands, flat open hands, and an extra right hand with the thumb sticking out which has a singular use that I will get to later. Like older figma, the hands are on a hinge peg which don't look at nice as the new ones and have less articulation too, which is my main complaint with these. They do work overall though, and is really just a minor problem.

Besides the default smiling face, she comes with a serious angry expression for action poses as well as a horrified expression, which is the latter is my favorite due to how perfect it is for unfortunate situations.

You of course get her signature weapon her Rose Branch Bow in both it's staff and fully bloomed bow mode. The sculpting is nice and the paint apps are well done, I especially like the gems in the middle of the bows. However the bow itself is done in bare plastic and it kinda looks cheap compared to the rest of the figure.

She holds it decently, however the grip is not tight, it might flop a little.

The extra hand with the thumb out is actually used to grip her light arrows to use with the bow. The figure comes with 4 although you're really going to be able to use one. Also, Madoka does not use her pointer and middle finger to shoot, instead, she uses her thumb and pointer, kinda looks weird but hey, it works.

She also comes with a pair of grief seeds that can be held with her holding hands. These do not look as thin as they did in the show, but it's a figure, having them as thin as they really were would mean they'd break instantly.

Finally Madoka comes with a small Kyubey figure, who is one of my favorite characters from any TV show. Reasons for this is spoiler territory as the show is filled with them, but I will say he is one of the most logical and well written characters ever. His head can move around, however if you angle it wrong, he won't balance super well.

Size Comparison:

Madoka reaches the shoulder height of the Robot Spirits RX-78-2 Ver. ANIME, so she's quite a shortie.

Bonus Ministory:

Learning magic mastery and attracting some passing-through Kamen Riders.

Target practice.

UCHUU KITAAAAAA!!!!!!!!

Verdict:

While this is an older Figma, I do think this figma still holds up well with modern ones, at least with my Asuna ALO Ver. Articulation is nice and it services well with small minor limitations, sculpting is well done, although there are a few minor nitpicks, there are a few minor gripes with the figure but overall I don't think it's enough to detriment the package that badly. Yes, I wish the hands were not pegs, I wish the elbows were the same color as the skin, and I wish the Rose Branch Bow didn't look so cheap. Still, I still think that this is a nice figure, and if you're a Madoka fan, you owe it to yourself to pick one up for yourself.

Pros:

- One of the cheaper figmas at 3048 yen, a lot of value considering the stuff you're getting. (!)
- Huge amount of accessories with this figure. (!)
- Paint apps are quite well applied, and imperfections, while there, are minor.
- Articulation is overall quite good for the age, she will pull off a nice amount of poses.
- Comes with a little Kyubey figure.
- Comes with the all useful Figma stand.

Cons:

- Hands are the old figma style and are on a hinge peg, which limits articulation a bit more and doesn't look as great.
- Rose Bow is unpainted and the bare plastic looks cheap in comparison to the figure.
- Elbow joints are light pink instead of skin color, doesn't match skin perfectly.
