Expo exclusives are always fun novelty items, no they don't look realistic, they're hard to come by outside of expos, and sometimes fetch some high prices on ebay. So imagine my shock when I just went to Fook Lee one random day, and found piles of the Star Winning Gundam Plavsky Particle Clear Ver. going for $10. I never wanted a Star Winning, but it was safe to say that the temptation for it was simply too much to bear for me, especially since I had a Build Burning Gundam Plavsky Particle Clear Ver., so I instantly bought it before it ran out of stock.
The kit itself uses the same mold as the original SDBF Star Winning Gundam, and functions identically so but like other Plasvsky Particle Clear kits it comes in translucent clear plastic with metallic flakes in them for the "Plavsky Particle effect". Due to this however, fitting tolerances are very low on this kit. Usually that's not a big problem, but since this kit does a lot of partsforming for transforming into the multiple modes, it's a much larger issue to note so extra care will have to be put into messing around with other modes. Another thing is due to the huge sticker use of the kit, a lot of areas aren't clear, I personally don't mind this, but I can see a few people taking this as a big issue. Other from these issues, the kit is the same as the SDBF Star Winning we all know. It's got all the joints for standard SD articulation, but the large armor parts prevent it from being super mobile even for an SD kit.
Just like the normal kit, it's head can turn into a Core Fighter, although the cockpit sticker does collide with an edge when transforming, so transformation might result in a fold at the cockpit in line on mine. You can also combine the body with the Core Fighter via slight transformation to form the Core Booster as shown below. There are also Star Funnels, two Gun Bits and two Guard Bits, the latter which can generate beam blades as well as turn into the Star Cross weapon, you can further merge the funnels with the Core Booster to form the Mega Core Booster as shown in the second image. Furthermore, you can do a lot of partsforming, and use the bits as limbs to turn the SD Star Winning into a 1/144 Real Mode. It looks pretty good for what used to be an SD Gundam, however due to the roots, the articulation is still that of an SD kit, so it can't do much posing at all.
Verdict:
The SDBF Star Winning Gundam Plavsky Particle Clear Ver. is a very nice expo exclusive kit, it certainly looks really cool with it's clear plastic and reflective flakes injected into the mix. The kit itself is really neat for an SD, and you have to keep in mind that this is a BB Senshi style SD even in the real mode, or else enjoyment of the kit might be rendered to disappointment instead. As an SD kit, this kit certainly excels with it's plentiful gimmicks and many modes. The stickers sorta destroy the illusion of a clear kit, but personally I really don't mind them, if anything, they were annoying to apply. Their metallic sheen kinda adds to the kit since it's a clear kit, and they still make the kit stand out, so i'm honestly fine with them. Overall, I think this kit looks great, and if you like SD's, and have the means, definitely consider picking this one up.
Pros:
- Many modes: Standard Mode, Core Fighter, Core Booster, Mega Core Booster, and Real Mode. (!)
- Clear plastic with the reflective injected flakes look awesome. (!)
- Lots of fun gimmicks like larger SD's have with the Star Funnels and clear areas.
Cons:
- Armor gets a lot in the way of posing, it's limited due to it.
- Very sticker heavy, although the metallic sheen on this kit compliments the clear plastic a bit.
Neutral:
- Real Mode is a brick due to being made from an SD base.
